Have you ever taken time to think about how most things came to be? From the earliest inventions as simple as bicycles to the latest trend, social media platforms, all these things have one thing in common. There is a creative genius behind these ideas. Creativity is in all of us. Sometimes, it may be conflicting to believe this. Some believe that only a special group such as artists have the ‘gift’. I choose to believe the contrary and find ways to spark the creative genius in me.
Now, since I would like to see more creativity in the world, I have gathered a few tips to help improve your creativity.
Learn to Relax
The ability to imagine and originate with “out of the box” ideas is all in the mind. It is a factory of ideas. A clear mind will have creative ideas flowing gently like a river. I encourage everyone, even myself, to relax and clear their mind. Go out and have fun, go for a walk, meditate or do whatever it is that calms your brain down. This is a guarantee that the results will be impeccable. You will not believe you had it in you.
Consider Yourself as Creative
It all comes down to the power of self. What you say and think is what makes you ‘you’. Do not limit yourself by considering that you are not creative. Let the thoughts flow, big or small, this is where it starts. As for me, I am confident enough that am creative otherwise would not be writing this. Even if your teacher, parent or friend tells you otherwise, consider yourself a creative genius. It will help open your mind to the world of endless possibilities.
Have a Journal
Some of the wildest and best ideas come to us when we least expect them. This is reason enough to have a journal. Record anything that pops up in your mind, even record dreams. Yes, nightmares too. Though terrifying, even nightmares can help you become creative. I mean, there are many game and movie characters born out of nightmares.
Do not hold back; jot down these ideas no matter how useless or irrelevant you think they are. Remember that in the realm of imagination; as my favorite neuroscientist, Oliver Sacks calls it, ideas are like the wind. They come and go and it is, therefore, important to have a journal.
Turn off Distractions
Social media, reading emails, watching TV and surfing the web are great ways to stay informed and entertained. However, they bar our ability to recreate worlds in our mind. It is hard to divert your attention from your favorite show and have a brainstorm session. To improve creativity, turn off all the distractions and give yourself some quiet time to reminisce and think.
Music Helps (Sometimes)
I do not know what power music holds but while listening to cool subtle tunes ideas keep flowing. Of course, not all genres help. If it is too captivating that you cannot help but move your feet to the rhythm of the beat, then, it is a distraction. Find good music like the classical music that will calm the brain and pave way for thoughts to flow.
Other ways include brainstorming with friends and finding inspiration from nature or humanity itself. Try either of the above and you will get the chance to sip from the creativity cup.
