What is your class size?
It’s pretty small. I usually teach about 4 students per class.
I can’t even draw a stick figure! Is there any hope?
This is the most common question. Don’t worry about the subject of talent and be careful about self-fulfilling prophecies like this one. Start with drawing.
Do I have to learn both acrylic and oil?
Nope. It’s your choice. Some love the meditative effects of oil painting while others prefer the expressive methods of acrylic. Contact me if your not sure what to choose.
What should I wear?
I recommend wearing something you wouldn’t mind getting paint on just in case!
I’ve been to a social painting class (paint and wine). Does it count?
Nope. You still have to start with the foundations.
What is the cancellation policy?
You get a full refund if you cancel 72 or more hours in advance. I do not give refunds or issue credits if your cancellation is made within 72 hours before the start of the class or in the case of ‘no shows’.
Why choose oil paints over other types of paint?
Oil paints are one of the great classic media. They have been used for hundreds of years and have stood the test of time. Almost all fine artists love oil paints because they offer great versatility. You can use them in your painting very opaque or thinned using a solvent.
What kind of support should be used with oil paints?
I use stretched canvas. The kind you can get from any art supply store. But, you can use linen, panels, boards, and heavy papers. At first, don’t waste your time preparing your canvas. Instead, just buy a pre-made one.
What brushes should I use with oil paints?
There is a wide range of brushes for oil painters. They include natural and synthetic bristles You need to experiment before you can decide what your favorite brand is. Usually, oil painting brushes have long handles and the hair is generally firmer and stiffer than other brushes.
What are some main advantages and disadvantages of acrylics?
The advantage and the disadvantage of acrylic paints are the same. They dry quickly. Because of this, you can apply many layers of paint in a short amount of time. Artists can very effectively use glazing and layering techniques when using acrylics. The layers of paint bind to one another very well because of their good adhesive qualities. But, you won’t be able to manipulate the paint once it’s applied.
What brushes should I use with acrylic paints?
Acrylics can vary from an almost liquid to a paste-like consistency. The thicker the paint, the stiffer the hair should be to move and control the color — acrylic brushes are classified as soft, firm, or stiff. As a rule, stay with synthetic-hair brushes.
